The President of the Dominican Health Tourism Association (ADTS), Dr. Alejandro Cambiaso, forecasts a great year for Medical Travel in the Dominican Republic.

According to the specialist, between 25 to 30 thousand international patients are treated each year in health centers, thanks to the international promotion campaigns held by ADTS and the Medical Tourism Association.

In an interview given to journalists Doris Pantaleon and Altagracia Ortiz, broadcast by Teleradioamerica, the renowned doctor highlighted the importance of quality and safety of the Dominican offer.

Likewise, he pointed out that the DR needs international accreditation, the implementation of a regulatory framework, and strategic planning under a public-private partnership.

Dr. Cambiaso explained that the Caribbean country has rebuilt infrastructure and upgraded its Medical Travel as follows:

  • Robotic Surgery at the Metropolitan Hospital in Santiago (HOMS, North)
  • Cardiovascular Care at the Center for Diagnosis, Advanced Medicine, Medical Conferences and Telemedicine (Cedimat, South)
  • Preventive Health and check-ups, Oncology, Orthopedic, Ophthalmology at Plaza de la Salud General Hospital
  • New medical infrastructures like International Medical Group in Punta Cana (East)
Highlights from 2017

In 2017 there was an integration of the diplomatic community and the publication of the Second Edition of the Health and Wellness Tourism Guide.

The guide is a tool to instruct potential medical travelers about the process of receiving quality medical care in the country.

Dr. Cambiaso mentioned the agreement signed with the National Competitiveness Council of the Dominican Republic -CEI-RD- to carry out a study and learn about the country’s Medical Travel competitive advantages in this field.

Most demanded medical services

However, there are other highly demanded and cost-effective medical services that are on the rise:

  • Dentistry, especially dental implants
  • Fertility treatments
  • Weight loss procedure such as bariatric and gastric bypass
  • Oncology
  • Orthopedic treatments, which has increased because the climate conditions favor recovery.

Similarly, the physician made it clear the need to take measures against non-certified doctors and unauthorized health centers.

Great year for medical travel

Dr. Cambiaso promotes the 4th International Health and Wellness Tourism Congress, from September 5-7th at the Renaissance Santo Domingo Jaragua Hotel & Casino.

The event has become the main activity of the Medical Travel industry in the Caribbean and features networking and investment opportunities, promotion and updating.

At the meeting, the competitiveness study will be presented, in an effort to strengthen the competitiveness and size of the Medical Travel market both locally and internationally.
