The Metropolitan Hospital of Santiago -HOMS- is located at the heart of the Dominican Republic, and they are best known for being the pioneers of robotic surgery in Central America and the Caribbean, receiving both local and international patients.

For the second straight time, the Metropolitan Hospital of Santiago -HOMS- sponsors the International Health and Wellness Tourism Congress, which arrived at its 4th edition and is scheduled from September 5-7th at the Renaissance Santo Domingo Jaragua Hotel & Casino.

The main Medical Travel event in the region is a meeting point for major national health centers like HOMS, Cedimat, Punta Cana Medical Center, Plaza de la Salud, Bournigal Medical Center, Central Romana Medical Center, and Punta Cana Doctors.

Furthermore, worldwide medical tourism authorities like Dr. Prem Jagyasi, Leslee Thompson, and Karen Timmons, the diplomatic community, large buyers of international health, and executives of the U.S. and Canadian hospitals.

Context

The idea of creating the Metropolitan Hospital of Santiago comes from prestigious Dr. Rafael Sánchez Español, a surgeon experienced on hospitable and private medicine, who also serves as President of the Board of Directors.

“Our interest to create HOMS was to provide Santiago, the region, and the country with a modern infrastructure, technology updated to global standards and one which complies to the highest international quality standards,” mentions a statement on the hospital’s website.

The Metropolitan Hospital of Santiago was inaugurated on March 30th, 2008. It receives both national and international patients and has positioned itself as a reference center in these areas:

  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular
  • Weight Loss Surgery
  • Preventive Medicine

Since then, it has expanded to receive thousands of medical travelers thanks to its infrastructure, technology, and taking advantage of the strategic geographic location of the Dominican Republic.

HOMS is a 16-minute drive from the Cibao International Airport (Santiago), which makes it a lot more convenient for international patients.

HOMS: The Pioneers of Robotic Surgery in the Region

On February 24th, 2014, HOMS opened the first Robotic Surgery Unit in Central America and the Caribbean.

The event received national and international attention and the assistance of the President of the Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina.

At the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Rafael Sánchez Español explained that this system called “Da Vinci SI” could interpret the movements of the surgeon and translate them on a robot scale with maximum precision since his system of three-dimensional vision allows greater visibility of the operative field.

“This makes the surgical act safer, with less discomfort and minimal blood loss, with the patient having an excellent recovery. With this technique, numerous surgeries are performed, including general, urological, gynecological, head and neck, oncological, among others,” said Sánchez Español.

The professional team of Robotic Surgery at HOMS is composed of doctors Rafael Sanchez Español; Juan Felix Capellan, José Alvarez Torres, and Hector Sánchez Navarro. The first three are pioneers in Laparoscopic Surgery, a surgical procedure that started in Santiago in 1991, registering to date about 20,000 surgeries of this type.

Meanwhile, Dr. Héctor Sanchez Navarro (pictured on the right) is the Director of the International Department and Robotic Surgery at HOMS.

At the 4th International Health and Wellness Tourism Congress Dr. Sánchez Navarro will participate at the Dominican Health Service Offerings panel, hosted by Dr. Alejandro Cambiaso, and along Ms. Claudia Arvelo, Managing Director of the Espaillat Cabral Institute; Dr. Eduardo Read, President of Salud Bucal; and Dr. José López, Vice-President and Chief Medical Officer of Health at the Central Romana Medical Center.

Institute of Robotic Surgery Samadi-HOMS

Dr. David Samadi is an expert in the treatment of prostate cancer, Chairman of Urology, and Chief of Robotic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital.

He is one of the very few urologic surgeons in the United States trained in oncology, open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery.

Dr. Samadi is actively involved in training and proctoring urologists and prostate surgeons across the country and internationally.

The expert is a widely regarded prostate surgeon, particularly for the success of his custom SMART Surgery and the Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic Technique yields exceptional prostate surgery results.

In that sense and during his stay in the Dominican Republic, Dr. Samadi was honored by HOMS for his humanitarian efforts in the field, and thus created the Institute of Robotic Surgery Samadi-HOMS.

“I am delighted to be part of the first Institute of Robotic Surgery and the medical advances that take place in the Metropolitan Hospital of Santiago (HOMS),” said Dr. Samadi at the event.

The MD added that the new institute and the acquisition of the Da Vinci surgical system offer great opportunities to save lives for patients throughout the Caribbean.

The Institute of Robotic Surgery Samadi-HOMS is composed of four ultramodern operating rooms and assists patients who need urological robotic surgery, gynecology, head, neck, oncology and robotic surgery in general.

According to the prestigious doctor, these operating rooms and Da Vinci systems are an important step to improve the evolution and recovery of patients who reside or come to the Dominican Republic for treatment.
