The Dominican Association of Tourism Press -Adompretur- supports the initiative of the Association of Hotels of Santo Domingo -AHSD- of promoting the development of meetings, incentives, conventions, and events tourism in Santo Domingo.
Adompretur joins the vision of AHSD of incorporating the Dominican Republic to a market that generated 200 million tourists worldwide during 2017.
The president of Adompretur, Luis José Chávez, said that meetings, incentives, conventions, and events, best known as MICE tourism, represents a tool to strengthen the economic impact of the industry and a special opportunity to consolidate the city of Santo Domingo as one of the main tourist destinations in the country.
The strategy to position the Caribbean country as one of the main destinations in Latin America of this tourism segment will be launched at SDQ Santo Domingo MICE 2018, an event held from October 29th to 31st, hosted by AHSD and backed by the Ministry of Tourism.
“One of the great strengths of meetings and events tourism lies in the per capita expenditure, where an international delegate consumes an average of 560 dollars per day, plus generally stays no less than six days, on average,” significantly exceeding the average spending of a sun and beach tourist,” said Chavez.
What is meetings, incentives, conventions, and events tourism
Meetings, incentives, conventions, and events is a type of tourism in which large groups, usually planned well in advance, are brought together for a particular purpose.
Recently, there has been an industry trend towards using the term ‘meetings industry’ to avoid confusion from the acronym. Other industry educators are recommending the use of “events industry” to be an umbrella term for the vast scope of the meeting and events profession.
SDQ Santo Domingo MICE 2018 is the marketing platform that allows hoteliers, allied suppliers and other professionals related to the business to meet on the same stage.

The event is also supported by the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic, Asonahores. The Ministry of Tourism has hired the services of the consulting firm Euromonitor International Limited, which is building an inventory of the strengths and potentials that the country offers in this sector, according to Chavez.
Most components of MICE are well understood, perhaps with the exception of incentives.
Incentive tourism is usually undertaken as a type of employee reward by a company or institution for targets met or exceeded, or a job well is done.
Unlike the other types of MICE tourism, incentive tourism is usually conducted purely for entertainment, rather than professional or educational purposes.
MICE events are usually centered on a theme or topic and are aimed at a professional, school, academic or trade organization or another special interest group.
