The “Living Legend of Submarine Abysses” Pipin Ferreras got a general evaluation at HGPS as he prepares to set a new world record on December 9th, 2018
A multidisciplinary team of medical specialists led by Dr. Alejandro Cambiaso evaluated the Cuban diving legend at the Preventive Health Unit of the Plaza de la Salud General Hospital (HGPS).
Pipin Ferreras will try to establish a new world record when he descends to a depth between 151 and 200 meters on a single breath, in Cap Cana.
“This dive that I will do here in the Dominican Republic will be the last one competitively speaking, after this, I will retire,” said the Cuban swimmer to a local newspaper.
Ferreras is a champion of apnea and recognized internationally for having established 21 world records.
Evaluation at HGPS
The studies carried out include informed consent before its evaluation and:
- 35 blood tests
- Chest x-ray
- Stress test
- Abdominal sonography
- Computerized axial tomography of the skull and paranasal sinuses
- Carotid Doppler and inferior limbs.
The evaluation at HGPS included visits to cardiology, pulmonology, otorhinolaryngology, psychology and by the expert in sub-aquatic and hyperbaric medicine Dr. Edward Canó.
Dr. Julio Amado Castaños Guzmán, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the HGPS, said that this health institution is at the forefront of scientific advances and promotes research that allows a deeper knowledge of the physiology of the human body and its adaptability.
Dr. Alejandro Cambiaso’s Role
A team of scientists will be at Cap Cana with Pipin Ferreras on December 2nd to obtain telemetries while he descends.
“After the sporting event, the apneist must continue with a training that goes hand in hand with hyperbaric and underwater medicine to continue with his post-event evaluation,” said Cambiaso, leading medical specialist.
The physicians will record data of Ferrera’s vital parameters, frequency and heart rate, saturation of oxygen, temperature, among other metrics.
Dr. Alejandro Cambiaso is one of the pioneers of preventive medicine within the Caribbean and president and founder of the Dominican Republic Health Tourism Association.
Dominican filmmaker Jorge Hazoury will document the attempt of Pipin Ferreras to descend to a depth between 151 and 200 meters on a single breath.
